A Look Inside The Golden Lion

The Golden Lion Inn is a pub that is full of nooks and crannies and will require

more than a brief stop to appreciate all of it's finer points. Originally the Northgate formed a courtyard area and the public bar and one of the lounges look out over the old courtyard. To the right can be seen Northgate Tower and the old fire station whilst to the left is the bustling High Street with it's good selection of unique shops. Looking to the front left of the pub is a cosy lounge which looks just like a traditional snug bar. At the left of this, on the outside of the pub, can be clearly seen the old entrance to the stables at the rear. This now forms part of the passageway between the snug bar and the lounge bar at the back. The walls in the snug and passageway are decorated with many fascinating old photographs including some taken of the pub in the early part of the 20th century. A feature of the collection are some historic shots from around Bridgnorth featuring many interesting buildings including the old bridge gatehouse. There is also a sporting theme with pictures of the famous racehorses, Nijinsky and Arkle, and a collection of golf caricatures.

The beams in all three bars are covered with pump clips/beer badges from all the many different beers served over the years at the Golden Lion Inn.

The rear lounge is another cosy room with a large inglenook fireplace as it's centrepiece. There is a horse brass-lined oak beam in the ceiling whilst the walls continue the historic Bridgnorth theme with more old photographs. One of the local features was the old racecourse at Tasley, which is sadly no longer in existence, however there are two old photographs showing racing in 1908. Racing was staged for over 100 years at Tasley from 1831 to 1939 and many horses were stabled at the Golden Lion.

The other bar at the front of the pub is a traditional 'public' bar where traditional pub games can be enjoyed, The pub has a number of domino and trivia quiz teams playing in local leagues. Amongst other leisure activities you can play are darts and quoits. For traditionalists the bar still remains uncarpeted and the exposed oak beam makes it feel like an old traditional bar. The bar also has a large collection of cigarette cards showing Charles Dickens characters.

However much enjoyment is had at the Golden Lion, and beer, the visit cannot be complete without a visit to the gents toilet for more reason than one. The gents toilets houses a staggering collection of old saucy seaside postcards.

Special Events

The Golden Lion Inn regularly holds special events which provides interest and variety for it's customers. One example is St George's Day which is a traditional English celebration that has been celebrated at the pub for many years and Jeff and his team are enthusiastic in their support for these activities.

Quite often, you may NOT be surprised to hear, these events are supported by a beer festival where a range of traditional ales from throughout the whole of the country can be sampled.

Other events can be found throughout the year as Jeff ensures that the Golden Lion retains the tradition of the Golden Lion Inn being at the heart of the local community.
